In today’s episode, we’re talking about business coaches. Do you need one? I’ll give you a hint: they’re probably not what you think. PLUS, I’m going to tell you a kind of embarrassing personal story about how I wasted thousands of dollars on help I didn’t need.
So today we’re talking about coaches and...I mean….Coaches kind of get a bad rap. Like a business suit boogie man, so many people hear the term “business coach” and automatically think, “No way No Sir tell em to kick rocks running.” And I think it's immediately assumed that a coach is just some MBA who’s going to loom over your shoulder like a big raincloud and tell you what to do in your company. If you wanted to have a boss, you wouldn’t have become an entrepreneur.
But as someone who’s done it all (went to business school, DIY’d my own company, taught business courses at a local community college, and hired coaches on my own), I caution you to rethink this. I would venture to say that if you’re a new entrepreneur, you might want to make a great coach a financial priority.
Think of it this way, at the recording of this podcast, It’s November so we’re moving into the new year and I’m wondering, How many of you made a new year’s resolution to hit the gym? Now, you knew this was coming….How many of you reached that goal? This is a great example of knowing WHAT to do but not staying motivated to DO it.
And we all do this! We all KNOW that healthy foods and exercising is the key to a healthy, happy body, yet many entrepreneurs struggle to stick with it. This all applies to your business. We all KNOW we need a business plan and market our businesses consistently, but then life piles up around us, and our plans never materialize, or we take a break from marketing because we’re too busy putting out another fire. And this is where a business coach comes in.
In this particular instance, a good business coach could keep you focused on your goal and the individual tasks at hand. Instead of getting distracted, a quality coach will work with you to establish a rock-solid plan of action. And if they’re something special, they may even have you draft a weekly accountability report to hold you responsible for your actions. If you get distracted from your prime directive, you’ll have to admit that and own up to wasting that time.
Of course, life outside of business can also be unexpected. What would you do if, suddenly, you had to drop everything tomorrow? Out of the blue, you needed to shorten your business hours or take time off entirely when emergencies happen. A good business coach can help you rearrange your business plans, so you’re not losing progress. Whether that means changing courses altogether or merely hiring an independent contractor to take over some of the tasks, your coach should be your sounding board if your mind is busy with other things.
And then there’s technology. The ache lies heel of so many entrepreneurs in the cannabis industry. For example, you KNOW that you’re going to need an online shopping cart, but indecision about software or uncertainty about how to install it can cause you to procrastinate. A business coach is going to have recommendations or, at the very least, the name of a tech person who can help.
Keep in mind that your coach is available to give advice, not to do the work for you. It’s their job to provide resources, and it’s your job to listen to your coach’s unique perspective on your business. Then you get to decide how you’re going to take action and follow through with your next steps. So no, a coach is not your boss. They aren’t going to tell you how to do your job. But, if you find the right coach and you show up in that relationship, they’re going to help you to feel confident in your own decisions.
