Researching Your Outreach Zone

HOW TO SELECT AN OUTREACH ZONE

Now you have a brand new folder all set up you are ready to begin research for your project.

The very first step in your plotting phase is to fill out your Brainstorm template by following the guidelines below.

YOUR BRAINSTORM DOCUMENT

Open your brainstorm document in your new folder. You can remove the words "copy of"  from the document title by deleting it from the title window in the top left hand side of your screen.

Start your project by selecting a retail location in a neighborhood that you would like to focus on. Look up the address for this business in google to determine the area zip code.

This zip code is the heart of your new outreach zone!

IDENTIFYING YOUR CLUSTER

Now that you know where your zone is, and what your tools are, it is time to determine which businesses you can add to your outreach cluster. To start:

  1. Identify what county your Zone Zipcode is in
  2. Head over to the Oregon Cannabis Business Database.
  3. Scroll through until you see your desired county.
  4. Identify how many businesses in the county are located within your desired zipcode.

Your goal is to identify 25 businesses. This may require you to expand your outreach zone. For example, If you are on the Oregon Cannabis Business Database, you will see that there are only four businesses located in  Baker county (at the top of the list). And there are only two businesses in each zipcode within Baker county.  In this case, we request that you expand your outreach list to include a neighboring county.

Please also note that the Oregon Cannabis Business Database is organized alphabetically by county. Just because Baker and Benton are side by side on the list, it does not mean that they are side by side geographically. To determine a neighboring area you can use the Oregon County Map.

HERE IS AN EXAMPLE

Say I want to focus on the area surrounding the dispensary Farma in Portland Oregon. I will follow these guidelines:

  • Hop on google and determine the area code.

The zipcode is 97214 and it is located in Multnomah county

If you scroll through, you will find that there are only 10 businesses in the 97214 area code of Multnomah county.

  • Look up a neighboring area to expand the boundary.

I can now head over to the Oregon County Map or the Oregon Zipcode Map to determine the neighboring areas. I might cross reference this with the Oregon Cannabis Business Database to decide which zipcodes are the best to complete my list.

  • Keep it under 25

Try to keep each outreach cluster under 25 businesses. You may have slightly more or slightly less than 25 by the time you complete your research.

  • Never leave a zipcode hanging

No matter what, you must reach out to every business in a chosen zipcode. This insures that we do not leave anyone behind.

  • Don't forget allied businesses!

Remember to add allied businesses to this list too. Allied businesses may include yoga studios, medical clinics, herb shops, cooperative grocery stores, any business who may be interested in collaboration. A simple google search with the neighborhood name should provide a few ideas.

FILLING OUT YOUR BRAINSTORM DOCUMENT

You will now record the following information on your brainstorm document:

  1. Outreach Zone Zipcode(s)
  2. Outreach Zone Neighborhood(s)
  3. Outreach Zone County(s)
  4. Outreach Zone Demographics (sex, age, education)
  5. Cannabis friendly businesses (yoga studios, clinics)
  6. Obvious businesses to ask for sponsorship
